James C. Berner

James Berner is a GIP Partner, having joined the GIP Mid-Market Fund (GMF) Team in 2011. Mr. Berner, based in Greenwich, Connecticut, leads efforts for GMF in the power generation, liquefied natural gas, and shipping sectors. He has originated and lead over US$3 billion of equity investments and is a member of the Fund’s Investment Committee. His responsibilities include deal origination, structuring, execution, monitoring, and exit strategy.

For GMF, Mr. Berner leads, or has led, investments in Jupiter Power, GasLog, Lexington Generating, Harquahala, Crowley Alaska Logistics, Guernsey Power, Lackawanna Energy Center, Mariah North Wind, Kingfisher Wind, North American Power I and Fort Detrick Energy. Mr. Berner has over 25 years of experience in infrastructure investing and lending. Previously, Mr. Berner was a Managing Director on the Energy Infrastructure team at First Reserve.

Prior to this, Mr. Berner was a Managing Director at General Electric Capital Corporation in its Energy Financial Services division, and was based in the USA, UK, and Singapore. Prior to GE, he was a Vice President, Project and Structured Finance, at Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. in New York focused on the US and Latin America. Mr. Berner earned a B.A., cum laude, from Cornell University, an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business. He speaks German and Spanish.
